Breaking all the cords of the social barriers, African Americans are now creating their waves in an academic arena, all thanks to United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Organization is exclusively dedicated itself to meet educational needs of the African American students by directly executing grants, scholarships and fellowships at all college levels. Students are also now enrolling themselves in four-year degree graduate programs putting obstacle on the question of cultural under-education.
Besides, there are grant, scholarship and internship programs from other sources meeting their specific professional and educational needs like The National Black Nurses Association giving support to student pursuing nursing by providing them grants between $500 and $2,000 for their four-year nursing programs.
Students going through undergraduate degree program in accounting or finance can avail themselves of grant through the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) on basis of their financial requirements and academic merit.The American Psychological Association also has in its anvil fellowship program to give financial assistance to minority students who are taking admission in psychology programs at graduate level.
In the United States, there are around thirty-nine black colleges, who are also part of the mission “Educational Enrichment”. Freshman scholarship and grants, Frederick Douglass Scholars Program and the Mordecai Wyatt Johnson Programs are grants confer by Howard University in Washington, D.C among best of the African American students showing academic excellence.
Morehouse College in Atlanta is also motivating students to achieve academic as well as athletic excellence by promising them various grants.Another college in Atlanta namely Spleman provides educational opportunities to the women of African American community, who are since centuries considered most disadvantaged segment of the population.
United States Department of Education is assisting Minorities and disadvantaged students through its Federal funds since mid-20th century. Many states are also funding their own programs for increasing and retaining streams of well-educated graduates in their state among which one of them is The Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant especially targeting disadvantaged students for their benefit of-course.
At federal level too, there is Pell Grant for students of low-income group and under this category, maximum 4000 thousand dollars are gave. It is also declares that any student availing Pell Grant can also apply for the federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, which gives another 200 to 4,000 dollars to support students from weak financial background.
